Dr. Mark Moldwin Appointed to AGU Board

By:

I am pleased to share that longtime AGU member and volunteer leader Dr. Mark Moldwin has been appointed to fill an open seat on the AGU Board of Directors.

Mark brings a wealth of organizational expertise as the inaugural president of the Education section and a past member of the AGU Audit Committee, Ethics Task Force, Publications Committee and Development Board. He currently serves on the advisory boards of the AGU LANDInG and AGU Bridge programs.

Mark is an active researcher and inventor with over 200 scientific publications and eight patents.  He currently serves as Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering and Applied Physics and the Director of the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs at the University of Michigan.

Prior to joining the faculty of Michigan in July 2009, Mark was a Professor of Space Physics in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences and the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at UCLA (2000-2009), Professor of Physics and Space Sciences at Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne (1994-2000) and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Space and Atmospheric Sciences and Non-proliferation and International Security groups at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Mark is active in ground- and space-based geospace research and leads several NASA spaceflight magnetometer projects (GDC, HERMES) and NSF ground magnetometer arrays (MAACS). He was recognized for his “extraordinary service to geophysics” with the 2016 AGU Union Waldo E. Smith Award.

Mark is a graduate of the University of Alaska Fairbanks and holds both a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Boston University.

In speaking with Mark, he shared the following hopes and goals:

“We face crises across a spectrum of issues important to AGU, the Earth and Space Sciences, and society. AGU has the capability and responsibility to participate in the fight for science. I have been looking for ways to not simply react to each crisis, but to be intentional, strategic and forward-looking as we navigate the broad range of attacks, while implementing efforts to help systemically change in response to the new environment. Together we can make a difference, and I welcome the opportunity to contribute to AGU in this role.”

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Mark Moldwin to the AGU Board of Directors!

2025-2026 AGU President
