AGU Statement on the Earthquake in Myanmar
Our hearts are with the people of Myanmar and the surrounding region following the powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake on Friday that has caused widespread devastation. We mourn the loss of life and express our support for those who have been injured, displaced, or impacted by this tragedy.
Our thoughts are also with the emergency responders, humanitarian organizations, and scientific community members who are working tirelessly in the wake of this disaster.
As a global organization supporting Earth and space scientists, AGU affirms the vital role that geoscience plays in understanding earthquakes and reducing their impacts. From seismic monitoring and hazard mapping to risk assessment and community preparedness, science saves lives—and continued investment in Earth science is essential to building resilience.
The United States has long been a scientific leader in seismology, partnering with countries around the world through scientific collaboration, technology sharing, and capacity-building programs. Now is not the time to step back from that commitment—especially as the world faces urgent challenges that require bold leadership, global cooperation, and evidence-based solutions for the good of all.
This is a moment for solidarity. Disasters know no borders, and the ability and capacity to prepare and respond to them must come from international collaboration. AGU stands with our members and partners in the region and around the world who are applying their expertise to help communities recover.
