Statement on the Los Angeles Wildfires
Our hearts go out to all those affected by the devastating California wildfires, which are destroying homes, displacing communities, and overwhelming firefighting efforts as they burn through thousands of acres with alarming speed.
AGU recognizes the immense challenges faced by residents and is grateful for the tireless efforts of first responders and organizations rendering aid to those in need.
Scientists play a critical role in advancing solutions to better predict, manage, and recover from these increasingly severe disasters. Our thoughts are with the scientific community who are impacted, including fire researchers dedicated to advancing our understanding of wildfire behavior for the benefit of society.
We encourage our community to come together in aid and advocacy. Below are links to organizations actively mobilizing and in need of support and resources:
American Red Cross
California Fire Foundation
California Community Foundation
World Central Kitchen
AGU stands in solidarity with Los Angeles and those in our geoscience community who call the city home. These fires are a stark reminder that climate change is driving more frequent and intense natural disasters, underscoring the urgent need for bold action in climate mitigation and adaptation to protect communities and our planet.
