Standing Together With a Generation of Federal Scientists

By:

Science is the backbone of our society. Robust, sustained commitment to research leads to discoveries and innovations that enrich all aspects of our lives.

Over the last few weeks, we have been witnessing the Administration dismantle the scientific enterprise. These actions are weakening the economy, undercutting national security and endangering the health and well-being of all Americans.

This week’s Executive Order threatens to eviscerate the staff of NOAA, NASA, the National Science Foundation and other agencies. Members of our science community have already been impacted by the reduction in force. These federal workers warn us about hurricanes, keep our water clean and dream up transformative technologies like GPS. Their work contributes every day to the benefit of human health, safety and our quality of life. The loss of a generation of scientists who serve the public good is shocking to contemplate.

To AGU members who work in the U.S. federal government: I cannot put into words the dismay we are feeling, knowing how the Administration’s actions are affecting your careers and your lives. Remember, even in the toughest times, that your community is here alongside you. I encourage you to stay in touch with your fellow members through AGU Connect, make use of services such as our Career Center and join upcoming advocacy opportunities to ensure your voice is heard by people making these decisions. Be sure to update your contact information online or by contacting our Member Services team and please keep an eye out for upcoming AGU messages on resources and community to support you.

AGU stands united with our members, partners and all affected by this ongoing disruption to scientific research and the solutions that research produces for the good of society. We will always stand with our scientists and with the agencies and organizations who make our modern lives possible.

We recognize that there always will be policy debates, but the scientific enterprise transcends politics. We urge the Administration to support a robust federal scientific community and continue us all down the path to a strong, prosperous future.
